Data Analyst

Permanent
Johannesburg  ·  Data & Analytics

Join a sports betting business's Data & Analytics team, turning data into clear, reliable dashboards and reports that stakeholders can act on — with room to grow into BI leadership over time.

The Data Analyst strengthens the Data & Analytics team's capacity to meet the growing demand for reporting and insight across the business. The role focuses primarily on business-intelligence (BI) reporting — turning data into clear, reliable dashboards and reports that business stakeholders can act on — while providing secondary support to data engineering and data automation.

It is deliberately scoped as a broad Data Analyst rather than a narrow specialist: the successful candidate is expected to learn on the job, grow with the business as its data maturity increases, and over time develop the depth to lead others in the team.

BI Reporting & Analytics (Primary)
  • Design, build and maintain reports and dashboards using the team's BI and reporting tools (Power BI today, with the stack expected to evolve) to meet business and departmental reporting requirements
  • Gather and clarify reporting requirements from stakeholders, translating business questions into well-defined metrics and data models
  • Deliver accurate, timely recurring reports and respond to ad-hoc analysis requests across the business
  • Define and document consistent metric definitions so that reporting is trusted and comparable across departments
  • Help stakeholders move beyond a spreadsheet-driven approach by presenting insight in accessible, self-service dashboards and promoting good reporting practice
  • Perform data-quality checks and validate outputs before publication to ensure integrity and reliability
Data Engineering & Automation (Secondary)
  • Support the Data Engineering function with data preparation, transformation and modelling tasks that feed reporting
  • Write and optimise SQL to extract and shape data across relational databases (MS SQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL)
  • Assist in maintaining and improving data pipelines and the automation stack that reduces manual, repetitive reporting effort
  • Provide backup and continuity for core data tasks, reducing single-person dependency within the team
Collaboration & Growth
  • Work alongside the Data Engineers and Data Automation resources to deliver end-to-end reporting solutions
  • Support and mentor Data Capturers being upskilled into Junior Analyst roles as legacy data-capture work is retired
  • Grow subject-matter and BI leadership capability over time, with a pathway to eventually lead the BI function
  • Maintain clear documentation of reports, datasets, definitions and processes
Key Performance Indicators
  • Report and dashboard delivery against agreed timelines (on-time delivery %)
  • Accuracy and reliability of published reports (data-quality issues raised per period)
  • Stakeholder satisfaction with reporting and responsiveness to ad-hoc requests
  • Reduction in manual reporting effort through automation and self-service dashboards
  • Contribution to reduced key-person dependency and improved reporting continuity
  • Progression against an agreed learning / upskilling plan
Qualifications & Experience
  • Preferred: a relevant tertiary qualification — e.g. BSc, BTech, National Diploma or equivalent in Information Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or a related field
  • Equivalent practical experience in data analysis or BI reporting will also be considered
  • Approximately 1–3 years' experience in a data analyst, BI reporting or similar data role is advantageous — a strong recent graduate ready to grow into the role will also be considered
  • Relevant certifications (e.g. in data analytics, SQL/databases, or a BI/reporting tool) are advantageous
Required Skills — Must-Have
  • Strong SQL and relational-database skills, able to work across engines (e.g. MS SQL, MariaDB / MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Hands-on experience with at least one BI / reporting tool (e.g. Power BI), and the ability to pick up new reporting tools as the stack evolves
  • Strong data-preparation, cleaning and validation skills, with sound attention to detail
  • Ability to translate business requirements into clear metrics, reports and dashboards
  • Good communication skills — able to work with non-technical, spreadsheet-oriented stakeholders
  • A learning mindset and willingness to grow with the business
Required Skills — Advantageous
  • Exposure to PostgreSQL, MariaDB or other open-source data platforms and reporting tools
  • Experience across more than one reporting / visualisation tool rather than a single vendor
  • Exposure to data-automation tooling and building or maintaining data pipelines
  • Experience with data-warehouse concepts and dimensional modelling
  • Scripting (e.g. Python) for data transformation and automation
  • Prior experience in a betting, gaming, finance or high-volume transactional environment
